Apicoectomy in Saint Joseph MO

At Northwest Endodontics, we specialize in providing advanced root canal treatments and endodontic procedures designed to save your natural teeth and improve your oral health. One of the treatments we offer to address persistent infections or complications after a root canal is an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure performed to remove the tip (apex) of the tooth’s root and any surrounding infected tissue. This treatment is often recommended when a previous root canal has not fully resolved an infection, or when a tooth has complex root anatomy that prevents traditional root canal therapy from being successful.

Why Would You Need an Apicoectomy?

Apicoectomy may be recommended for several reasons, including:

  • Ongoing Infection: If the infection around the root tip persists after a root canal.
  • Fractured Root: If the root of the tooth is cracked or damaged and can’t be repaired through traditional methods.
  • Obstructed Canal: In cases where the root canal couldn’t be fully cleaned or sealed.
  • Cyst or Abscess: If a cyst or abscess has developed around the root and is causing discomfort.

By opting for an apicoectomy, you can avoid tooth extraction and keep your natural tooth intact.

The Apicoectomy Process at My Northwest Endodontics

Our team at My Northwest Endodontics is highly experienced in performing apicoectomies with precision and care. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure:

  1. Local Anesthesia: We ensure your comfort by numbing the area with local anesthesia. If needed, we can discuss sedation options to help you feel at ease.
  2. Incision: A small incision is made in your gum tissue to expose the root tip and surrounding area.
  3. Removal of Infected Tissue: The infected tissue and the tip of the root are carefully removed.
  4. Sealing the Root: The end of the root is sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent future infection.
  5. Suturing the Gum: We close the gum with sutures, which will dissolve naturally in the following weeks.

What should I expect after an apicoectomy?

Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your apicoectomy, you may experience mild discomfort or swelling, but this is typically temporary. At My Northwest Endodontics, we provide personalized aftercare instructions to ensure the best recovery experience. Here are some tips to aid your healing:

  • Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen usually suffice to manage any discomfort.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Follow your endodontist’s instructions on how to care for the surgical site. This may include gentle brushing and avoiding hard or chewy foods.
  • Follow-Up Appointment: We’ll schedule a follow-up visit to check on your progress and ensure that healing is going smoothly.

Our Latest Patient Testimonial

If I could give more stars I would. I have a great deal of anxiety when I see a new doctor and he and his staff were very kind and caring as they took care of me. The staff had excellent follow up following my procedure. I would definitely recommend this practice to attend to any dental needs you would have.
